Garrotxa is located in the north of Catalonia, in the upper basin of the river Fluvia, headers Muga and Amer and Llémena.
In this region you can see two completely different types of landscape. While for much of the southern half are spread over 40 various volcanoes and lava flows, forming a smooth landscape with few slopes, Protected by Natural Park of the Volcanic Area the Garrotxa, from the valley of the river Fluvia north the landscape changes dramatically, becoming steeper and steeper cliffs and canyons with abundant. It is high Garrotxa, an area declared a Natural.
All these spaces, along with other, as the river Fluvia, part of the Natura 2000, a European initiative to protect the most unique natural areas, various, rars, preserved, representativius, fragile and vulnerable to connect with others of the same features.
The vegetation reflects the climate. While the high Garrotxa and east of the region is an area of vegetation, Mediterranean, the rest of the region is covered by sub-Mediterranean vegetation that happens in the most humid Atlantic. The oak is characteristic of the sunny slopes of the eastern, with relatively dry summers, the oak forest that is predominate in other areas, and beech forest is found in the wetter areas. A the plana d'Olot, the natural species more characteristic is the common oak, but today its presence has been reduced to small forests located around the city.
